Hi,

Thanks, I enjoyed the race very much. I remember entry is usually sold out relatively quickly so I just wondered if you knew the approximate entry opening for next year.

Hope to see you next year,

Connell

Great event, thanks again to you and everyone involved in putting it on.

Loved the mud!

Hi Graeme,

Thanks so much to all involved. It was my first time doing the race and it was fantastic.. the event was so well organised, the marshals were all so encouraging and supportive and the cake... well... immense.

Even the weather didn't spoil it, just made it more fun.

I'll definitely be back next year, a bit less hungover 🤢😅

Victoria 🙂

Hi Graeme

I want to say thank you for organising such an amazing event!

I was so impressed by the organisation and assistance from everyone, especially all of the young people who gave up their time.  It made me really proud to be part of the community and reminded me again of how luck we are to have some fab trails on our doorstep.

It was my first Milngavie trail race (my husband ran last year and we both managed this year - the kids spectated with friends!) and it will be a firm favourite for many years to come.

What a great event - you and the team should be very proud of what you achieved.

Best wishes

Alison Locke

Hi Graeme

I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who organised and marshalled at yesterday’s event. Despite the rain, mud and deep puddles the run was fab, great course and great marshals.

The day was made by all the lovely people who baked all of the delicious cakes and served the cups of tea after the race.

So a huge thank you to all.

Jill Coleman

Thanks Graeme

Another superbly organized event with the now, expected, very high standard of home baking!!

thanks to everyone involved in  making such a big success.

See you next year!

Barbara

Race Information - please read carefully

RUNNER INFORMATION

Dear Runner, welcome to the fifth running of the Milngavie Trail Race, I hope your training has gone well and you are ready for a great day. If you are new to this type of event or if you are a seasoned runner using this as a tapering race before the West Highland Way Race in a couple of weeks, I hope you enjoy the race and hit your own personal target.

The race is being organised and run by 20th Glasgow Scout Group and you should see some of our young members throughout the day helping out at registration, marshalling and generally offering lots of encouragement to you. Take a moment to thank them for their help as you fly past.

OK, so what do you need to know?

Venue

The Race HQ is the Scout Hall of 20th Glasgow Scout Group which is situated on the edge of Lennox Park in Milngavie. The race starts in Lennox Park and passes through the village centre before heading out onto the West Highland Way and Mugdock Country Park and then returns back through the village to finish at the same spot as you started.

The Race HQ has an upper and lower hall and the upper hall will be used for registration and post race refreshments and the lower hall is available for changing and baggage.

Race HQ address is:

45-49 Main Street Milngavie G62 6BX

Parking

There is no parking at Race HQ. The nearest car parks are at Tesco’s and Milngavie Railway Station which are both a short walk from Race HQ. Tesco operate CCTV and penalty charges and so use of this car park is at the Runner’s own risk. There are a number of other small public car parks in and around Milngavie and so we would ask runners to use these where possible.

There is a regular train service from Glasgow into Milngavie every half hour and the first train on a Sunday morning gets into Milngavie at around 9:35am. Race HQ is only a 5 minute walk from the station.

Race Stats

The race starts at 11:00am on Sunday 2nd June. Registration will open at 9:00am and close at 10:45am. There is usually a rush towards the end so please arrive in plenty of time. Runners must register before the race when they will be given their race number. Numbers must be worn on the runner’s front for the entire duration of the race. Safety pins will be available but it’s always useful to have some spare ones with you!

Runners must assemble on the start line 15 minutes before the race for a pre-race briefing. The start line will be located on the grass next to the skate park in Lennox Park; approx 400 metres from Race HQ (look for the big green flags!)

The race is approximately 8.5 miles or 13.5 kilometres long and has about 500 feet of ascent. Most of the ascent is covered by two “small” hills at about 1 mile and 2 miles in respectively; the second one is a tough one! After that it is pretty much flat or downhill all the way.

The first and last half mile or so is on tarmac footpath or roadway, after which it is almost all off road on a mixture of hard packed trail, wooden boardwalk, unsurfaced woodland path and some rocky and technical single track.

A copy of the route map will be on display at race HQ and is also attached at the end of this information sheet.

Changing

There will be a hall at Race HQ for changing before and after the race. It is not a private space so no bare bums please! You are welcome to leave your kit bags here but they remain your own responsibility.

There are limited toilet facilities (male and female) at Race HQ but no showering / washing facilities.

Shoes

Shoe choice is entirely down to each individual but as a guide, I would suggest that if it has been dry for several days prior to the race, you would be ok in road shoes. There are a few persistent muddy sections and some of the trail is rocky and quite technical and so my own preference is to wear trail shoes but whatever you choose to wear, it is likely that they will get muddy. If they don’t, you’re not trying hard enough!

Water

There are no water or aid stations on the route so runners must carry with them any food or drink they feel they will require during the event. Consider the weather conditions on the day (it is very often warm) and ensure that you have sufficient with you; especially if you expect to be out on the course for some time and the weather is warm. We have taken this decision to keep the amount of potential littering (accidental and deliberate) to an absolute minimum and to retain the goodwill and support of the other trail users.

There is a standpipe by the Carbeth huts at just over halfway where you can refill your bottle if necessary.

Water and refreshments will be available at Race HQ at the end of the race.

The Route (see attached route map)

The course will be marked with direction arrows throughout and marshals will be positioned at key points on the route. Take some time to familiarise yourself with the attached map and, even better, get out onto the route and run some of it.

As a general rule, if you see a path or trail leading off the path you are on and it is not marked, do not take it. Keep on your current path until you either see an arrow or are directed by a Marshal. The race follows the West Highland Way for the first couple of miles until you are directed by a Marshal up the hill into Mugdock Park. When you return to this point in the race at about 6 miles, you follow the same route back to the finish. On this section, if in doubt, follow the official West Highland Way route markers.

Injuries

There will be first aid cover in place during the race both on the course and at race HQ and so if you require assistance or are with another runner who requires assistance, speak to one of the Marshals on the route and they will contact the first aid support.

Runners should be aware of the type of terrain and the associated risks involved with this type of race and whilst it is considered to be low risk, you should remain vigilant at all times and proceed with caution on the more uneven and technical sections of the route. By taking part in the race you have agreed to accept full responsibility for your own safety and the risks involved with undertaking a race of this nature.

Withdrawal

If you have to withdraw from the race or are unable to finish, please ensure you tell one of the Marshals and that information is passed back to race HQ. If we are unaware that you have withdrawn, we will spend significant amount of time searching for you on the course so please make sure that you tell us.

Litter

Simple – Don’t!

If you are spotted by one of the Marshals dropping litter, your number will be noted and you will be disqualified from the race. Sometimes, you can drop litter without realising and so if you see someone ahead of you dropping litter, let them know or if someone tells you, that you have dropped some; thank them and pick it up. Remember, if you can carry it full, you can carry it empty.

There are a small number of bins on the route and there will be plenty of bins provided at Race HQ.

Dogs

I know many people enjoy running with their dogs (I do!) and may see this as a suitable opportunity for them to bring them along however, as a Scottish Athletics sanctioned event, the rules state that runners cannot be accompanied by a dog. So I’m afraid Fido will need to stay at home.

Headphones

For the safety of all runners and to allow you to enjoy the surroundings, the use of ipods, MP3 players etc. is not allowed. Having earphones in prevents you from hearing requests from other runners or trail users and any instructions from Marshals on route. Singing however, is positively encouraged!

Refreshments

This is the bit you’ve been waiting for! All runners will be able to enjoy a selection of hot and cold drinks and some delicious home baking as a reward for your efforts. These will be served at Race HQ (hopefully
outside if it’s sunny!) and so I would encourage you all to take some time after your efforts and come and enjoy some of our post race hospitality.

For any friends or family that have come with you on the day, a small cafe will be run at Race HQ whilst you are all out running, where, for a small donation, they can buy hot and cold drinks and some of the home baking. All the money we raise from this will go towards buying equipment for our scout group and carrying out improvements to the scout hall.

Timing

The event is being timed by a company called Stuweb with a disposable timing chip fixed to the back of your race number.  Your race number, with the chip attached, will be handed to you when you register on the morning of the race. Please ensure that your number is clearly visible and securely fixed to the front of your T shirt and that you pass the start and finish line timing zones to ensure that your finish time is recorded. Please do not fold or alter your number in anyway as this may affect the timing. You should be able to collect a printout of your finishing time and position from the timing van as soon as you finish and the full results should be available on the Stuweb website www.stuweb.co.uk later that evening.

Any queries about your times should be directed in the first instance to Stuweb.

Prizes

All finishers will receive a medal and a fantastic bottle of Jaw Brew beer courtesy of our local Craft Brewery.

The prize giving will be held at 1:00pm in the upper hall of Race HQ and there will be prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd Male and Female. The winners of each category will be awarded a trophy that they can keep but they will also be awarded the Milngavie Scout Staff which will have the winners name placed on it and we would ask that these be returned by the winners in time for next years race.

There will also be a number of spot prizes up for grabs including some bottles of Fizz, the final copy of Jim McLarnon’s book “Milngavie Trail Runs” and some very generous gift vouchers from Achilles Heel. Race numbers will be drawn from a hat (if we have one big enough) at the end of the prize giving and if you’re not there to claim your prize, your number will be removed and another one selected. Another reason to stay and enjoy some cake!

A Thank You

I think it’s important for you to know what the money we raise from the race gets spent on. Our Scout Group has 150 young people ranging from 6 years to 18 years old (not counting us Leaders!) and we rely on volunteers, donations and our annual subscriptions to allow us to run fun, adventurous and challenging activities. The money we have raised from the Trail Race has been spent on: • New Patrol Tents • More improvements to the rear of the hall • New internal lighting to the downstairs hall • Essential roof repairs to stop water ingress • Equipment and supplies for the weekly programme of activities Thank you to everyone who has taken part in the race, your participation provides a real benefit to the lives of lots of young people in our area and we will continue to use the funds from the race to do so.

If you want to get involved in helping out with our Group there are lots of roles you could take on, some of which require a regular weekly commitment but some only a handful of times a year. No experience is necessary, just some enthusiasm, and a desire to make a real contribution to the lives of our young members. For more info, either contact me on the number below or speak to anyone wearing a Group Neckie on race day.

Thank you all, once again.
